About the Character:
1) Indira Gandhi was the daughter of “Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru” and “Kamala Nehru”, both of them were freedom fighters in the Indian independence struggle.
2) Before coming into politics she was the personal assistant and host to her father.
3) She was born as Indira Nehru on 19th November, 1917 at Allahabad.
4) She formally joined congress party and after that became the party president in 1959.
5) She won from “Raebareli” Lok Sabha seat and became Prime Minister in 1967 with tenure of 11 years.
6) In 1971 she started “Garibi Hatao” or Eradicate Poverty campaign, launching anti- poverty programs for rural as well as urban poor.
7) She also served as a member of “Rajya Sabha” and became cabinet minister in Lal Bahadur Shastri’s government.
8) She was married to Feroze Gandhi, who belonged to Zoroastrian Parsi family hailing from Gujarat.
9) She made the country capable of having nuclear weapons; under her regime operation “Smiling Buddha” was launched to carry nuclear tests.
10) One of the leaders in opposition at that time, Sri Atal Bihari Vajpayee called Indira Gandhi as “Goddess Durga”.
